Trump Officials Shared War Plans in Group Chat with Journalist

Top national security officials under President Donald Trump mistakenly included The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, in a secure group chat where they discussed upcoming U.S. military strikes in Yemen, according to a report published Monday.
The National Security Council acknowledged that the leaked texts “appear to be authentic.” The messages reportedly detailed planned airstrikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels, including information about targets, weapons, and attack sequencing.
When first asked about the leak, Trump claimed he was unaware of it, only addressing the matter 2.5 hours after it was reported. He later appeared to joke about the breach.
While it is unclear if the information was classified, operational details of military actions are typically secured to protect service members and mission integrity.
Notably, two hours after Goldberg received the messages on March 15, the U.S. launched airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. The U.S. has been striking the Houthis since November 2023, when the group began targeting commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea.
